A decade of trance, ritual, and rebirth

Between chaos and devotion, flesh and spirit, Ylva Falk moves like a bridge between worlds. Her collaboration with Chinese artist Tianzhuo Chen and the collective Asian Dope Boys spans more than a decade—a living dialogue between dance, ritual, and contemporary art where body becomes prayer and performance becomes ceremony.

Together, they have created a series of groundbreaking works including:

TRANCE (2019–2025), PHYSIS (2019–2025) ,An Atypical Brain Damage (2017–2019), Ishvara (2015-2017) ADAHA (2014–2015)

Ylva’s roles have ranged from choreographer and movement director to casting lead and performer, shaping the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of the work.

Their latest collaboration, TRANCE, is a 12-hour durational performance inspired by the bardo—the Tibetan Buddhist journey from death to rebirth. A descent through hell and ecstasy, the work merges music, movement, and ritual into an immersive communal experience. Raw, political, and transformative, TRANCE dissolves the boundary between performer and audience.

At its core, Ylva’s presence carries the thread of embodiment—a living antivenom to separation and numbness—channeling chaos into consciousness, and turning art into an act of rebirth.

“Representing something / By being just being…”

FRANK is Ylva Falk’s latest solo performance — a raw, physical, and poetic exploration of embodiment, identity, and defiance. Conceived and performed at Wehrmühle, Berlin (2024), the work merges movement, voice, and presence into a living confrontation with expectation, gender, and the politics of perception.

At the heart of FRANK lies Ylva’s own poem — a declaration and provocation:

Through these words, Ylva summons the wild feminine — uncontainable, intuitive, and untamed. Her performance oscillates between stillness and eruption, intimacy and rebellion. It examines how society attempts to frame or domesticate power, and what happens when the body refuses containment.

The piece unfolds as both confession and mirror: part myth, part autobiography, part exorcism. Sometimes she runs, sometimes she burns. The audience witnesses a being that cannot be explained — only experienced.

FRANK is not about performance in the traditional sense; it’s about being — radical honesty as resistance. It asks, with biting tenderness:

Yoiyamividja (宵闇ヴィッジャ) — The Witches of Twilight Darkness — is a performance art film conceived by Ylva Falk as an artistic collaboration with Kana Kitty, Malakai, and Viktor Schroeder.

Emerging from an urge for expression beyond convention, the work connects Swedish and Japanese cultural lineages through Butoh, design, and contemporary ritual. Rooted in the shared experience of Ylva and Kana—who met in Japan in 2017 while studying Butoh—the piece embodies years of artistic dialogue and spiritual kinship.

The performance weaves together pagan traditions, feminine archetypes, and the physical language of Butoh, forming a visual and emotional landscape that bridges ancient culture and modern identity.

Filmed and exhibited at Mahalla Berlin during Berlin Art Week 2025, Yoiyamividja invites viewers into a liminal world—where shadow and light, body and myth, tradition and transformation coexist in motion.
